Sand Ceremonies – What’s it all about?

Sand Ceremonies: What are they, why do we do them and how you can create a special sand ceremony yourself!

Sand ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular as couples are finding great ways to add a modern twist on a traditional ceremony.

So what is a Sand Ceremony and why are we so excited by them?!

The beauty of a sand ceremony is the visual symbolisation of joining two people together in marriage by the blending of two coloured sands.  It can be a quirky twist on the traditional unity candle ritual (and perfect for outdoor weddings, saving you from re-lighting the candle 10 times on a windy day!).

Sand ceremonies can also be a beautiful way to show the joining of two families by involving the children. Candle unities can be limited to how many people can take part, but with sand ceremonies it gives you the opportunity for everyone to be involved. The combining of sands is an awesome way to symbolise the two families coming together and the perfect way to make your loved ones feel part of your day.

Now, how do you get started?!

Typically, you will have 3 vases. There will be two different vases with different coloured sands (one representing each part of the couple) and then a larger vase for the union. The newly wed will then take it in turns to pour their sand into one creating an explosion of colour and a wonderful portrayal of two becoming one.

There are lots of ways you can decide on the colours of the sands you choose. You could base it on your favourite colours or keep in it aligned with the colour theme of the big day, or even match it to the colours of a room in your home where you will have it displayed!

If the ritual is representing two families joining you may want to add extra vases to symbolise each member of the families, each with their own unique sand colour. They can be vibrant and colourful or if your wedding is taking place on a beach you could use the sand from the very spot you exchanged your vows – how special is that!

When do you conduct a Sand Ceremony?

There is no rule book to say when and where your Sand Ceremony should take place. Some couples choose to do it alongside the vows and exchanging of the rings. This can be quite powerful as it heightens the symbolisation of the unity of marriage.

How can you personalise a Sand Ceremony?

There is no right or wrong way on how to create a Sand Ceremony, the great thing about it is that it can be entirely planned by you to completely reflect your own style. A Sand Ceremony can be conducted in whatever way that feels right for you. Typically, couples will say a few words about what the unity means to them and the Celebrant will instruct you both to pour the sands.

However, if speaking in front of an audience isn’t quite your cup of tea you could play music or have your Celebrant say a few words or present a reading as the exchange is being made.

As for the actual sand and vase, there are so many different options to choose from! Here are just a few options:

-You can choose from a huge variety of the shapes and sizes for the vase.

-Adding pebbles, shells, flowers or plants in with the sand (You can be extra decorative if it’s going to be displayed in your home!).

-You may want to add a message or photograph that means something to you as a couple or a family on the front of the vase.

-Not to mention the endless colour combinations you can play around with.
