Humanists and Celebrants are very similar in their approach to writing and officiating wedding ceremonies. They both offer personalised weddings in any location.

Celebrants work independently giving each Celebrant the freedom to include whatever the couple would like in their ceremony.

Humanism believe that life is based on humanity and reason, and that moral values are properly founded on human nature and experience. They do not believe in religion and because of this do not include any religious aspects into their ceremonies, however you may have religious content through readings from members of your party.

Why would I choose a Wedding Celebrant over a Registrar?

Having a Celebrant led Wedding Ceremony means you have complete flexibility over your venue – anywhere, anytime. With so many hidden gems, stunning private estates, beautiful outdoor locations, unlicensed and licensed venues out there, a Celebrant offers you the chance to have your wedding in any location you find and love.

A Celebrant will also personalise your ceremony to suit your style and you will get to know your Celebrant over the course of planning your wedding so you have a personal, meaningful connection for the most important day of your life.  Your Celebrant will create a unique ceremony from scratch, one that truly reflects you as a couple. It can be light hearted, humorous, formal or simple and will perfectly suit you as a couple.

In the UK, Local Registrars are bound by their legal format and there are limitations to the content of the service they can provide. They have set times, set locations and restrictions on what they can and cannot say or do. It is more than likely you will also not know the person delivering the most important words to you as a couple either.

Lastly Celebrant led weddings offer an affordable alternative. You no longer have to search purely for wedding venues that are licensed; you may have a favourite restaurant, farm, beach or even holiday home that hosts large parties, the options are endless with a Celebrant.

Is a Celebrant led wedding ceremony legally binding?

In England, Celebrant led weddings are officiated separately to the legal signing of the register. This is usually done prior or after the wedding ceremony and won’t affect your Celebrant ceremony at all.

You will need to register your intent to marry with the registry office and book your appointment to sign the legal documents. The legal element of your marriage is just a short appointment that will involve signing the marriage licence, and saying a few contracting words in front of 2 witnesses of your choice. It is not a legal requirement to exchange rings and vows, so these can be kept for your wedding ceremony with your Celebrant.

The legal process can differ slightly from one local authority to the next, so please check in with your local registry office on the steps you need to take to become legally married. Once complete, you are free to have a ceremony that you truly love.

In Scotland, Humanist Celebrants can legally marry couples anywhere in Scotland so the legal documentation will be completed on the day.

For a more detailed breakdown on the legal process, read our guide on how to legally marry with a Celebrant.

Not having a your wedding in the UK? Please contact your favourite Celebrants for an outline of the legal process in your desired country.

What should I look for when choosing a Wedding Celebrant?.

Your wedding ceremony is the most important part of your day so you need to feel comfortable with the person leading the service.

All the Celebrants featured on this website are trained and qualified, however each Celebrant has a personal style and it needs to fit in with yours. When contacting your favourite Celebrants it is worth having a list of questions together so you can gauge if they are a good fit. Look out for the following too:

Are they a good communicator?

You can tell a lot about a person by how well they speak on the phone. Do they listen to you and are they articulate? Remember this person will be standing in front of your loved ones so it is important they are clear. Being a good celebrant is all about listening to your needs. They need to understand your wishes for the ceremony. If they start to come up with ideas in your first chat, then you can bet they’d be great at creating something that suits you.

Do they have reviews?

Today, a lot of our choices when purchasing something are made from other user experiences. This site offers Celebrants the ability to ask their previous couples for reviews and for couples to leave reviews too, so check them out as they are independent of the Celebrant themselves. If you like what you see, then there is another reason to pick them!
