I train family members in how to make effective eulogies or tributes. We can train a family member to play a special song..

Hi, I'm Andrew

Hi I am Andrew Vass. I have been a history teacher, therapist, and free-lance journalist writing monthly feature articles for the Highland press. I loved doing a training in Funeral Celebrancy and I used my journalistic skills to write impressive eulogies as part of the training.

My tutor at the Academy of Professional Celebrants wrote,

‘I am thrilled to recommend Andrew Vass as a community funeral celebrant. I believe he will go above and beyond with his ability to write and deliver outstanding funeral ceremonies for his families.’ Stuart Logan

As a historian, I can identify a very appropriate insight, poem or song, which strikes the right tone. As a therapist I have thought a lot about how far a well-crafted service can help with grief.

What's my ceremony style?

My son and I like to work together. I enclose comments we received recently. * ‘Thank you for such a moving service. It was a wonderful tribute.’. * ‘You and your son are very talented.’ We work together to write the eulogy and service plan. This means we bring insights from our different life experiences. By working together we can cope with the problem of colds and flus. I have been appalled to attend funerals in which the celebrant sounded hoarse so that he or she could barely be heard. All celebrants should be ready for such problems by having a stand in. As an experienced journalist and retired teacher, I think I can create interesting and clearly expressed eulogies.

Why choose Andrew?

I see a funeral service as being essentially a ritual. In rituals we often find meaning. But one doesn’t have to be religious to find meaning. Each of us can find a very personal sense of meaning to life if we identify what truly matters.
As a therapist, I have learned the importance of having ‘life celebrations’. A leading writer on grief wrote; ‘you can transform grief by accentuating the meaning the person had for you in your life.’ I will have a therapist’s considerateness and discretion in my interactions with family and friends..

Funerals

I work with various funeral directors in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. I am happy to visit families or plan their special event with Zoom or some other internet provider. I can also work with questionnaires which give families longer to consider what really matters to them. Headings like; ‘List some ways your loved one influenced you.’ and ‘I am grateful to have this special relationship because…’ can help families to consider what meanings they can take from this special relationship. Due to my training as a therapist, I can also help families to consider how to move forward despite their tragic loss.

Why choose Andrew for your funeral?

My sense of being called to be a funeral celebrant started some time ago when several close family members passed away. My wife, Sylvia also died calmly and peacefully. after her struggle with cancer. I feel inspired by her resilience. My son Kenny had just become a celebrant. I was most impressed by his great efforts to help people as a celebrant- the caring carefully crafted work he put into funeral ceremonies. I decided to train as a funeral celebrant myself. Now we are ‘father and son- community-spirited celebrants- ready to serve others..

Funeral | 10/22/2022 | City of Edinburgh

I attended a memorial celebration in Edinburgh recently, and witnessed Andrew and Kenny fulfilling their responsibilities as celebrants in a way that was warm and empathetic, and also appropriate to the occasion and the audience. Kenny honoured the deceased with a well-researched tribute, which he delivered in a relaxed and pleasant cadence. Andrew and Kenny are both very musical, and together they played tunes and sang songs which were favourites of the deceased and highlighted significant aspects of her life. To me they demonstrated a natural aptitude for the vocation of celebrant.
