Hi, I'm Dawn

Hi! I am Dawn Rees. I am a lively and creative Humanist celebrant. I perform weddings, vow renewals, baby naming celebrations, in fact ceremonies that celebrate all occasions – so don’t hold back!! My clients are likely to be looking for a celebrant that is inventive, quirky, definitely not run-of-the-mill; a good listener and a good writer, with loads of personality balanced by sensitivity; gravitas where necessary, and always with a great sense of humour!. Whatever your ceremony, it will be unique – because it is written for you and never ‘cut and pasted’ (beware the celebrant who promises you the earth and charges you 50p!) I am based in Norfolk but I have a bit of a reputation for being an adventurer and I travel all over the UK and Europe conducting ceremonies. My camper van is my best friend and changing room and pit-stop.

What's my ceremony style?

I offer the full range of ceremonies – weddings for same-sex, non-binary and straight couples, partnership celebrations, vow renewals, namings, adoptions, coming of age parties, gender reveal and ceremonies marking transition. In fact, I am up for celebrating anything that is important to you.

I particularly love the challenge of outdoor ceremonies but equally I love the intimacy of small spaces and the quiet hush of your family and friends as you make your promises to one another, or to your children.

I offer most of the symbolic expressions of union for examples hand-fasting, union cups, jumping the broom, ring warming, oathing stones and vow bells, tree planting and one of my favourites – sharing wine!. I will always incorporate ideas into your ceremony that are personal to you as a couple and represent your culture.

Why choose Dawn?

I am fun to work with, full of ideas, energy and experience and a fluent public speaker. I love listening to what people want, encouraging them to think wider and deeper so I can create a unique and memorable ceremony. I am a great writer and your wedding script is co-produced with you so that it is recognisable as you and about you – it is so important that your guests find areas of familiarity as well as surprise! The skill is writing it so it flows seamlessly from beginning to end. I am conscious that families and friends will hold all sorts of beliefs and represent different cultures. My clients say that I am skilled at incorporating the wider group into the intimacy of the ceremony – as one said recently It was dignified and memorable but with lots of laughter. Another said they were surprised and delighted at how emotional it made them feel.

What do I offer?

Weddings

My ideal couple? All sorts of couples! I love you all – my main aim is to find a connection and that gives me energy, then we feed one another with lots of ideas based on our conversations.
My favourite ceremony type? I do love a big complicated wedding that’s inclusive of guests and with some surprise elements in there – such as ‘silent vows’ or ringing ‘the reality bell’. Equally I love an intimate wedding on a beach with just us three. And everything in between!

Hi! I am Dawn Rees. I am a Humanist celebrant which means that I create individual ceremonies with no reference to religion.

I am based in Norfolk but I have a bit of a reputation for being an adventurer and I travel all over the UK and Europe conducting ceremonies. My camper van is my best friend and changing room.

What sort of ceremony do you want? I can do formal, quirky, themed, lively or relaxed ceremonies. It really depends on what you want…. and this is the key – it is you who defines what you want on your special day and I work with you that so your day looks, feels and is exactly how it you imagine it when you’re laying in bed dreaming about it. Celebration days go in a flash, so I take care of ceremony detail with guidance from you. That means you don’t have to worry on the day; you can just concentrate on enjoying yourselves.

The little things that make such a difference to planning your ceremony are second nature to creative and experienced celebrants – check out whether you felt inspired and excited by our conversations; whether you came away with fresh ideas to mull over whilst you are planning; did we talk about finding the most authentic way to tell your love story; did we have fun; did I ‘get’ you; were you confident that I could blend the story of your relationship with the promises you’ll make to one another for your future together?

When we meet we’ll think about words but we will also use our imagination, talk about impact, and more importantly the pace of your ceremony. Choosing a celebrant who is able to manage the pace of the ceremony, creating energy and humour as well as quiet, reflective and intensely personal moments, means your day will not only be memorable for your guests, but most importantly, for you.

My clients say that working with me is fun and they also appreciate the range of contacts I have – from niche venues, formal caterers, to performers, musicians, sound artists, florists, photographers, event lighting, owl ring-bearers, wedding carriages, fingerprint trees for naming ceremonies, wishes boxes, mobile bars, street food vendors, photo-booths, vegan and vegetarian caterers, Prosecco caravans, VDub transport ……… along with the more mundane heel-protectors for stillettos on grass, or sourcing chalk-boards for the order of events on the day!

I also have an offer up my sleevies! I have a #popup ceremony surprise for weddings, namings and celebrations. This can, as if by magic, appear in a garden, a beach or a field near you! It’s a tiny vintage caravan with a beautiful yellow and white canopy, a gorgeous rug, chairs, flowers, window-boxes (oh, and champagne on ice) for that ultimate oh, didn’t you know, we just thought of it party!! It is so dinky, you won’t be able to resist.

Whatever you want we can make it happen – indoors or outdoors, in the UK or abroad.

Wedding | 02/06/2022 | Voewood House, Norfolk

Wow! Dawn Rees, where to start with this incredible lady..
We hired Dawn in 2020 pre covid, I’d stumbled across her somewhere online and later discovered an old friend had hired her for her wedding and was thrilled with the ceremony shed created. A good sign from the off. When we later discovered we’d have to postpone our wedding 3 times due to covid and a move abroad, Dawn was not only super flexible, but incredibly supportive. She happily held our hand through all the ups and downs and encouraged us to reach out whenever we needed, she wanted to use the extra time as an opportunity to get to know us best she could.
The ceremony.. after we cancelled our Hindu wedding in India due to a move abroad and the birth of our first baby, we decided with Dawn to include some traditional Hindu aspects to our Norfolk Humanist ceremony.
Dawn was incredibly patient as we spent weeks deciding what to include and negotiating the ceremonial aspects with family in the UK, we spent so long working through the details, that even after postponing the wedding 2 years, we still didn’t send the draft to Dawn until 2 weeks before the wedding. Dawn was as ever, incredibly supportive, firm, but supportive! Weeks earlier she’d also suggested we throw in a surprise ‘naming ceremony’ for our baby! And what a surprise that turned out to be for our guests!
Dawn suggested we punctuate our baby’s moment by getting all the guests to blow bubbles, which was a truly magic moment. As part of the Hindu wedding elements our florist prepared us and our baby floral garlands, so rather than integrating the hand fastening element to bind the 3 of us, we exchanged garlands and presented one to the baby too.
The day before the wedding at the rehearsal our family tried to spring a few additional elements on us, Dawn took this all within her stride and graciously worked with everything we threw at her, always in the most jolly and excellent spirit! She couldn’t have been more up for it! The days itself was incredible, the naming ceremony was a gorgeous surprise on top of the combined Anglo/ Hindu elements.
We have had the most incredible compliments from our guests. Many have said it just felt so full of love and emotion and they also loved the relaxed vibes! Dawn herself drew lots of compliments.. everyone said ‘excellent’. She was a true gem and I’m so grateful we chose her as I’m not sure we’d have managed organising a wedding from the other side of the world with a newborn without her!

Dawn not only gets rave reviews from me and Sue, as she gave us exceptional support leading up to the event, she also suggested backup plans and kept us informed via email, newsletters and telephone calls. Many of our guests said it’s the best ceremony they have been to and it made them very emotional as number of them were also part of the ceremony. It was the best bit of our day and our guests too.

The hand tying and bespoke ceremony was exceptional and I am not normally a gushing person but Dawn really made our day very special she is such a powerful speaker and very emotionally in tune with people cannot recommend enough. This is not as eloquent as Dawns words but the best I can do and a big fat thank you from Karen and Sue.

We cannot thank you enough for making our day very special and also making such an impact on all the guests.

Dawn was the celebrant for our wedding last summer, and from the moment we read her celebrant profile, we knew she was our lady! When we met, she was warm, friendly, fun & gave us all the information we would need with no obligations. Nothing was too much trouble and she really got to know us, which came across to everybody on the day, who all commented on how unique and relaxed the ceremony was. Dawn was a very important part of our perfect day and we couldn’t have been happier. A lovely lady and an awesome celebrant. We would recommend again and again
