I have lots of experience of being a busy celebrant –I spend many years in Scotland regularly conducting legal humanist weddings as well as funerals and naming ceremonies-I build relationships and work together with people that choose me to be their celebrant to create real, individual, warm ceremonies that reflect their personalities, lives and loves.

Why choose Caroline?
I’m a humanist through and through. I’m the celebrant network support coordinator for London for Humanists UK, I’m regional coordinator for the Non Religious Pastoral Support Network. I was on the management team of Humanist Society Scotland where I engaged with families in the HSS membership. I am happily married with two sons one in his twenties and one an imaginative eight year old! I run a school gardening group and work with the community at my son’s primary school to give some children who don’t the opportunity to participate in gardening the chance to grow plants and vegetables.
What do I offer?
Would you like your wedding ceremony to be the most memorable part of your day for you and your guests? I will work with you to create a beautiful, personal, bespoke ceremony that is the most enjoyable and vibrant part of your beautiful day.
My husband and I had one of the first legal humanist wedding ceremonies in Scotland in 2006, and we and our guests loved it. We got creative our wedding ceremony was meaningful and beautiful. We let our guests hear our authentic story, my friend sang Songbird, my dad read ‘Kooks’ by David Bowie as a reading, we got our son involved and we said vows that were informal and meant something. I was a magazine editor at the time and I was so enthused by our wedding experience, I became the editor of the national humanist magazine ‘Humanitie’ for six years and became a humanist celebrant.
One of the happiest days of your life is your wedding day and with a humanist ceremony, your special day will be very personal to you both. As a great romantic it is a privilege to meet up with couples and hear how you met each other and the story of what brought you to the point where you want to commit yourselves to each other. I will guide you through the process. I will help you to choose the different elements of your ceremony such as poetry, music and your vows and exchanging of your rings. Then on your actual wedding day, of course, it is very enjoyable actually conducting the ceremony that you declare your love to each other in front of your chosen guests.
Why choose Caroline for your wedding?
You two are important, what you choose for your ceremony. When we meet we’ll have a long chat. I explain the process, hear about your ideas and ensure you know what’s available to you. You give me your full story as homework, you get a first draft from me. We work together until your ceremony is exactly how you want it. Days before your big day we run through your vows and everything else, we see each other, reassurance that I am the friendly face that you’re going to feel comfortable and relaxed with during your wonderful wedding ceremony.
One of the most joyous events in life is a birth of a child, and a close second is a naming ceremony for a child.
It is a chance to bring together family and friends to welcome a little person into life.
I encourage siblings to get involved in the naming ceremonies, and double naming ceremonies are a good option to bring together two sets of children when parents get together with children from previous relationships.
Naming ceremonies are a great perk to being a celebrant, I like nothing better than doting on a baby!
Why choose Caroline for your naming ceremony?
Renewal of Vows
Why choose Caroline for your renewal of vows?
A humanist funeral ceremony is a celebration of a person’s life, although it is a very sad time, we make the ceremony a joyful tribute of the deceased person.
I am warm and friendly, when I meet up with you, I will chat with you and ask you lots of questions about your loved one’s life and help you to recall the different elements of their life, what they liked to do, what they didn’t like, their character, the relationships they had with friends and family, happy times and moments you remember with them and about them. I will get a full picture of them, then write a tribute and a humanist funeral ceremony, and you can review what I have written to make sure it is right and I have captured them accurately.
Three pieces of music are recommended for a funeral ceremony, you may already have some tunes or pieces in mind, I can give you guidance. A sombre piece at the beginning, a quiet piece in the middle when people at the funeral will be reflecting on your loved one’s life, and it is good to have an upbeat piece at the end, something that sums up them in a happy way and will make people smile when they hear it. I can also recommend poetry and readings that are reflective.
I’m also an accredited member of the Non-religious Pastoral Carer Network and have experience of sensitively listening to people in a pastoral role in Hospices.
Why choose Caroline for your funeral?
Having a traditional humanist funeral is becoming challenging with current Corona Crisis, as the number of people that can attend is restricted. But it’s still important to say goodbye and celebrate the life of your loved one. At the moment I am meeting the deceased families and friends on video calls or telephone. For you the closest people to the deceased I will work with whatever you feel more comfortable with. I have options of how I can work together with you to make sure families and friends can celebrate your loved one’s life whatever restrictions are put in place.

It was like a friend was marrying us
Caroline captured or story perfectly and made everyone laugh and cry along with us when describing our journey, the ceremony was incredibly personal and by choosing a humanist celebrant and were able to meet with Caroline and talk candidly before the big day. Caroline brought familiarity to the ceremony, which made everyone feel included. The highlight for me was seeing everyone laugh along with us. It’s high pressure and a very emotional time in anyone’s life and Caroline handled the guests perfectly with her humour and humility
It was truly as though a friend was marrying us. Caroline’s kind nature and unyielding commitment to us on our big day is something that we will treasure always. I recommend her whole heartedly for any special occasion I hope she knows what’s her input meant to us.
Perfect big day
Caroline was wonderful, from the beginning she was always happy to answer questions and help us get the ceremony the way we wanted.
As we were living in Australia we didn’t meet Caroline until the day before the wedding, we communicated over email and several Skype calls, We knew she was the choice as she made the whole process smooth and tailored to us, and on the day of the wedding, everything was perfect.
Would most definitely recommend Caroline, she truly is great at what she does and makes the day as special as it can be, you can count on her from beginning to end to be there for you and know that everything will be perfect on your big day!
