Hi, I'm Gillian

I believe in compassion, kindness and warm-heartedness and that is why I am an Independent Celebrant.

The importance of marking life events, ‘threshold moments’ with Ceremony cannot be underestimated. At this time, when our world is in such turmoil, it is vital that we take the time to show that we care, to recognise and acknowledge the importance of the occasion for those we love and cherish.

It is such a privilege to create a Ceremony that allows us to step away from our busy lives, our ordinary thoughts, and lets us focus on the power of the moment. To join in connection with a circle of special people, to honour the occasion, the love, the sadness, the joy, the real emotion that is Ceremony.

I am committed to being a Celebrant who creates the Ceremonies which are the most fitting and unique for you. I am also, therefore, committed to being continually open to learning more about my craft.

So far, I have completed my first year of training as a OneSpirit Interfaith Minister: I hope to be ordained next summer.

I was awarded a Distinction in the City and Guilds Accredited Programme ‘Successful Civil Celebrant’ and I have completed a range of training courses.

I have created and led a number of different Ceremonies as part of the above training: these include: ‘A Ceremony to Celebrate Growth’, ‘Baby Welcoming’, ‘Rite of Passage from Childhood to Adolescence’. I have also officiated at two Funeral Services.

I am very proud to have created my own ‘Graduation Celebrations’. These have given Graduates the opportunity to celebrate their achievements in a very different way from the grand, large-scale and less personal University and College Graduations. My Ceremonies involve close family and friends, and include the invitation for others to praise their Graduate, and to share their pride. I have held two of these so far, and have had very positive feedback, particularly as University and College Graduations have been held online due to Covid 19.

Following my long career in Special Education, my new chosen path as an Independent Celebrant gives me great joy. It allows me to continue to work closely with people, to respect, support and share in their lives. It is a role of great importance and significance: a role that I take very seriously and to which I am committed to giving my all.

What's my ceremony style?

Ceremonies that I offer include: Funeral, Memorial and Celebration of Life services, Weddings, Renewal of Vows, Baby Namings, Change of Name Ceremonies, Pet Memorials, Divorce Ceremonies, Rite of Passage Ceremonies, and I have developed my own ‘Graduation Celebrations’.

I am very excited about creating Ceremonies to mark any ‘threshold moment’: any change, beginning, ending any significant event that deserves to be observed. As a new Celebrant, I am also exploring new and different ways to celebrate and honour life.

I love nature and being outdoors: all of my Ceremonies honour nature, natural life events and cycles, and I delight in being able to offer Ceremonies in places of beauty. Mountains, woodlands, beaches, places of great significance to you, provide ideal surroundings for the most meaningful Ceremonies. Whatever the weather: it can only add to the atmosphere and uniqueness of the moment.

I love to draw on customs, traditions and rituals, calling in ancient times and people, and natural elements, adding great depth and meaning to your Ceremony.

My Ceremonies are created from a starting point of respect and honour. They can be completely secular or can include Religious aspects and elements. As a OneSpirit Interfaith Minister in training, I am learning more and more about different Faith Paths and Spirituality, and take great pleasure in this learning and incorporating it into future Ceremonies.

Why choose Gillian?

I will take whatever time is needed to get to know you, to listen carefully to your wishes, and consider all the possible options to create a Ceremony that is YOURS.

I will give great attention to details and ensure that you are completely comfortable with the Ceremony we create together. You will feel totally reassured that all that you will need to do, is experience ‘the moment’ of your Ceremony which will be a ‘forever memory’.

People make stories … And stories make people … And I love to be the writer of people’s stories. I love to weave your stories into the Ceremony, drawing on customs, traditions and rituals that are right for you … or creating new traditions that reflect you … And can perhaps be used for other ‘threshold moments’ in your family: becoming new traditions, unique to you and yours.

I love music and literature and can suggest pieces of music and readings that you may not have already considered. I can also offer to write poetry specifically for your Ceremony, based on your words and/or those shared by others, taking my inspiration from the time that I have spent getting to know you.

I can create a Ceremony that is completely secular, or that includes Religious aspects: again, my commitment to you is that your Ceremony reflects your values, personality, qualities and characteristics, and those of the other people involved.

I am committed to communicating clearly and directly with you, to listening deeply to your wishes, to applying my organisational and administrative skills and my creativity, to creating your Ceremony: with YOU and for YOU.
