Hi, I'm Steve

The very best in modern celebrancy. Personal, bespoke celebrations written from blank paper and delivered with flair, fun and dramatic ability. Handfasting and ‘community’ celebrations a speciality.
I also deliver costumed fantasy celebrations. I offer options for themed events – so whether you want the Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, any period in history including Viking and Medieval, Elvis, steampunk, zombies (etc.), I can help. I can adapt books, film and tv scripts into wedding or funeral services.
I never forget that I’m just one part of your ceremony, so I work with your team to imagine, write, deliver and record your perfect day.
There is no limit to where I can perform your celebration either. I’m happy to travel!
I have over 30 years of experience in writing and delivering great celebrations. I have been an actor, presenter, writer and poet. Where will our imaginations take us?

What's my ceremony style?

Every ceremony or celebration that I create is unique to the individuals I’m working with. Some people want simple things done well, others want layers of symbolism; everyone wants their ceremony delivered with emotion, skill and flair. I can do that, with the skill of an experienced performer. Many people want a fantasy ceremony, but think it’s not available because they can’t find a celebrant who will dress up and say the right words. I can do that, and I think I’m uniqueI love the element of fantasy and I love the way that the perfect celebration makes people laugh and cry at the same time. The showman in me loves the performance and the geek in me loves the detail. I love the stories and the poetry; I believe in the beauty of language and that it has power, especially when it’s allied to the right symbolism. I’m entirely non-judgemental. I’ve conducted LGBTQ+ friendly events and polyamourous handfastings.

Why choose Steve?

Three words people use to describe me: professional, unflappable, imaginative. I offer a combination of experience and expertise many would struggle to match. I have a deep knowledge of the history of ceremony, and of the practical side of putting a celebration together. You’re in safe hands! I offer traditional and modern celebrations delivered with flair and style. I do this work because I love it. It’s not just a job, it’s a calling.
I write co-produced scripts so everything is perfect, and I offer a degree of showmanship on the day which other celebrants might struggle to match. I’m not your conventional celebrant.

What do I offer?

Weddings

My ideal couple are in love!
They live their lives in their own way, without needing to seek approval from others. They want something bespoke, but with meaning – just words won’t do, and words that have been used for someone else’s ceremony won’t do either. They put in the hard yards and expect me to do the same. They are Renaissance people; artists and scientists at the same time.
My favourite ceremony is one where we co-produce something which uses space, words, props and images innovatively, to create a really memorable event.

I have three packages, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The higher-value packages include more or in-person rehearsal time, a higher level of souvenir script, additional ritual elements involving props and handmade gifts for the participants. Everything is negotiable – we can mix and match to provide your perfect package.
All of my clients get my full attention. I only ever do one ceremony in one day, and it can take me weeks to write the perfect ceremony. All of my wedding ceremonies are different. Some have multiple layers – such as a handfasting followed by another ritual element.
I also do betrothals, elopements and even divorce ceremonies. I find the divorce ones are particularly powerful in reconciling and healing wounds caused by a break-up.

Why choose Steve for your wedding?

I have over 30 years experience of leading ceremonies, of writing and performing in public. I understand the ‘rules of ritual’ so that my ceremonies are always powerful. My ceremonies are based on meticulous historical research combined with innovative staging and creative, poetic writing to create a truly magical experience. I have my own voice as a poet, an artist a ritualist and a writer so that my ceremonies are distinctively different. I go the extra mile for my clients; they get exactly what they want and all the support they need to achieve their perfect dream ceremony.
Most of my weddings start with a blank piece of paper – if you want it, you get something which is uniquely yours.
I’m also good with other suppliers, and work well with planners, photographers and videographers to ensure you have the perfect record of your perfect day.

Naming Ceremonies

I offer non-religious or explicitly pagan ceremonies based around meticulous historical research combined with innovative staging and creative, poetic writing. Naming ceremonies (or in fact re-naming ceremonies, in which a person adopts another name from their birth-given name) are historically powerful statements of identity – and an opportunity to be welcomed into a tribe or community. They are a pledge of mutual support and recognition.
I like to work with parents who are adventurous and who have their own minds – they understand that names have meaning and that what you call a person is important.

There are some companies I work with who make glass objects (https://www.eleriowenglass.co.uk/) and customised jewellery (https://www.whattheravenstole.co.uk/products) for example, to provide fitting keepsakes which will be treasured into old age. These extras are entirely optional!

Why choose Steve for your naming ceremony?

I carried out my very first naming ceremony for a friend’s child over 35 years ago. This was at a sacred site in West Wales, and involved a tree, a spring and some other very basic ritual props. I’ve come on a long way since then! I limit the number of clients I take on so that they all get an ‘above and beyond’ service.

Renewal of Vows

My ideal couple are adventurous, love dressing up and fantasy, and have few limits to their imaginations. They are inspired by film, tv and/or literature. They love history, but they are also very modern in outlook. They want something bespoke, but with meaning. They live their lives in their own way, without needing to seek approval from others. They are probably pagan, but could be agnostic or atheist. They are Renaissance people; artists and scientists at the same time.
My favourite ceremony is one where we co-produce something which pushes the boundaries of what people think is possible. The innovative use of space, words, props and images to create a really memorable event. I like working with some grandeur, whether that be in nature or in a man made structure like a castle or a ship.

My renewing couples want renewals of vows for many different reasons. For some, it is because it’s always good to fall in love again even if you’ve never been out of love, This is an acknowledgement of the ‘rightness of path’; a way to celebrate the right decision made and the re-affirmation that, in the same circumstances, you would have done the same thing. For others, it can be a fresh start. It is a way to ‘re-set, forgive, forget and move on’. For yet others, a renewal of vows is about moving from one status in the community to another – many people do this when they become grandparents rather than parents, or when they reach a certain age and feel that something has changed.
Whatever the reason, I’m here to help.

Funerals

I prefer to deal with families directly, but I am happy to deal with funeral directors who also offer an ‘above and beyond’ level of service to their clients.
My ideal funeral client values the truth of someone’s life in all its variety. Not many people are exclusively black and white. One of my favourite eulogies is John Cleese’s for Graham Chapman. I pride myself on being able to make people laugh and cry in the same celebration of life, and when I deliver a eulogy, people say “did you know (him/her)?”
This is the one area where I am not usually ‘the Costumed Celebrant’ – unless it’s specifically requested by the family.

I am one of the few pagan celebrants in the West Midlands, but I also offer agnostic and atheist celebrations of life.
I specialise in some of the more emotionally ‘difficult’ areas.
I specialise in biker funerals – and I’m happy to turn up on a bike!

I also offer memorials and anniversary celebrations of life, so for people who did not get the celebration that they deserved because of the pandemic, now’s the time to think about that send-off that (s)he deserved!

Why choose Steve for your funeral?

I go the extra mile for my clients; they get exactly what they want and all the support they need to obtain closure from a funeral. I only ever do one celebration per day so everyone gets my full attention. It is my task to understand my families and co-create what they want. I am equally at home as a Master of Ceremonies, supporting others to present their individual truths and in the more traditional celebrant role delivering a eulogy and leading the celebration of life.

The Celbrant at my Granddaughters naming ceremony gave an outstanding performance. He included parents along with champions/Supporters of my Granddaughter. The ceremony combined the best of historical integration and gave every attendee a true and powerful bond with my Granddaughter. Thank you Steve Morris
