Living Funerals Trend: The Millennial and Gen Z Approach to Celebrating Life, Not Death

Living Funerals Trend Millenials and Gen Z survey

Celebrating Life While You’re Still Here

In a world where traditions are continuously reimagined, younger generations are transforming the way we think about life’s final milestones. Enter the concept of Living Funerals—a heartwarming and personal way to celebrate life while the guest of honour is still present. Often referred to as “prefunerals” or “living memorials,” these ceremonies are growing in popularity, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z, who are less tied to traditional end-of-life customs and more interested in personal, meaningful experiences.

A recent survey highlights this growing trend, revealing a desire to create moments of joy, reflection, and connection—turning the traditional idea of funerals on its head. So, what’s behind this shift, and how can you plan a send-off that celebrates you?

What the Numbers Say: Living Funerals in the Spotlight

Research by Funeral Choice shows an increasing number of people are embracing the idea of living funerals. Their survey revealed that while 71% of adults have already considered how they want their funerals to be, 29% are interested in hosting a funeral while they’re still alive.

The interest is even more pronounced among younger generations, with 53% of 18–24-year-olds and 52% of 25–34-year-olds considering this option. Alix Baldwin, Director of Funeral Choice, explains:

“Historically, living funerals were more commonly held for people who are terminally ill as a way to say goodbyes in their own way. What’s interesting is that our study has found more UK adults, regardless of health status, are interested in being there for their own funerals.”

With over 18,000 Google searches a month in the UK for the term “living funeral” and a 30% increase in searches over the past year, it’s clear this trend is here to stay.

What Is a Living Funeral?

Living funerals, also called prefunerals or living memorials, celebrate a person’s life while they are still alive, allowing friends and family to share their love, stories, and goodbyes in a meaningful and celebratory way. These events can be held anywhere, from homes and venues to hospices, and are often filled with music, speeches, and joy.

The concept has been popularised in the media, including the recent Netflix rom-com Love at First Sight, where the main character returns to London for his mum’s living memorial. These celebrations are about connection and love—giving people the chance to hear and feel the impact they’ve had on others.

Millennials and Gen Z: Celebrating Life, Their Way

For younger generations, a living funeral isn’t just about saying goodbye—it’s about making a statement. With their desire to celebrate life in personal and unique ways, Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge in reimagining these ceremonies.

Take the inspiring example of Kris Hallenga, who hosted her own “FUNeral” at Truro Cathedral after living with terminal cancer for 14 years. Her day was filled with music, dancing, eulogies, and love. Kris described it as the best day of her life, using it as a platform to encourage more open conversations about death, funeral planning, and what truly matters in life.

These generations are breaking the taboo around death and crafting ceremonies that reflect their values, personalities, and legacies.
