Seaside Dreams: A Whimsical Beach Wedding on Weymouth’s Victorian Seafront

Dorset Beach wedding ceremony handtying with Celebrant

For Kirstein and Matt Parmenter, Weymouth Beach wasn’t just a stunning stretch of award-winning coastline—it was the backdrop of their first holiday together and their escape from life’s daily pressures. When they approached celebrant Laura Bell with their dream of exchanging vows on the golden sands, they knew they were asking for something unprecedented. What followed was a celebration that perfectly captured the quintessential British seaside spirit, complete with donkeys, ice creams, and a historic helter-skelter watching over their special day.

The ceremony was quintessential Great British Seaside vibes. The day featured donkeys, ice creams, deck chairs, and rides on the helter-skelter.

Laura of Ceremonies by Laura Bell shares with The Celebrant Directory the ins and outs of the day.

From Dream to Reality: Planning the First Beach Wedding at Weymouth

The path to this unique ceremony began with six months of careful planning and coordination with the local council—a process that Laura navigated while keeping the couple’s dreams at the forefront. The ceremony itself was a beautiful blend of personal touches and seaside symbolism, anchored by two meaningful rituals that reflected both the location and the couple’s journey together.

A Victorian Seafront Transformed: Creating an Intimate Ceremony Space

Against the backdrop of Weymouth’s Victorian seafront, the ceremony space was thoughtfully created within the donkey trail area. Thirty blue and white striped deck chairs dotted the sand, creating an intimate ceremony space that perfectly balanced formality with seaside charm. Laura’s copper ceremony arch, draped elegantly despite playful attempts from Gracie the donkey to sample the decorations, framed the couple perfectly against the iconic helter-skelter and Alexandra Gardens.

Binding Love and Legacy: A Personalized Handtying Ceremony

The handtying ritual was thoughtfully crafted to weave together multiple aspects of Kirstein and Matt’s story. Laura selected ribbons in blue and white to mirror the deck chairs that dotted the beach, creating a visual connection between the ritual and their chosen setting. But the most poignant element was the wool from Kirstein’s late mother, carefully incorporated into the binding—a touching way to ensure her presence was felt on this special day.

Adding another layer of meaning, Laura attached star charms to the bindings, each one representing the children from both Kirstein and Matt’s previous relationships. This thoughtful detail transformed the traditional handfasting ritual into a powerful symbol of not just the couple’s union, but the blending of their entire families.

“The handtying ritual was particularly moving,” Laura recalls. “As I bound their hands with these meaningful materials, you could feel the emotion from everyone present—even the curious onlookers who had gathered to watch seemed to understand they were witnessing something truly special.”

Blending Lives: A Meaningful Sand Ceremony by the Sea

In a poetic tribute to their chosen venue, Kirstein and Matt incorporated a sand ceremony that took on special significance on Weymouth Beach. Using the very sand beneath their feet, the couple participated in this symbolic ritual of unity. “There was something incredibly powerful about using sand from the actual beach where they were getting married,” Laura reflects. “It wasn’t just any sand from any beach—it was sand from their beach, the place that held so many precious memories for them.”

The ritual involved the couple each taking a portion of Weymouth’s fine golden sand and blending them together in a ceremonial vessel, creating a unique pattern that could never be separated—much like their lives moving forward together. This beautiful symbolism was made even more meaningful by the setting, with the sound of waves in the background and the sea breeze carrying their promises to each other.

The ceremony flowed naturally from one meaningful moment to the next, with Laura artfully weaving together their love story with carefully chosen readings. The rituals were thoughtfully placed throughout the ceremony, creating natural transitions that kept their guests (and the growing crowd of onlookers) captivated. In a testament to how intimate the ceremony felt despite its public location, Laura, the couple, and their guests were so immersed in the celebration that they were completely unaware of the hundreds of beach-goers who had gathered to witness this unique event.

The ceremony concluded with the signing of a keepsake certificate, a tangible reminder of their extraordinary day. This final ritual, though simple, provided a perfect closing to a ceremony that had transformed a public beach into a sacred space of celebration.

Love in the Details: Personalizing Every Moment

“When Matt and Kirstein first approached me about their beach wedding dream, I knew we were creating something special,” Laura shares. “Every meeting with them reinforced why they chose this location—it wasn’t just about having a beach wedding; it was about celebrating their love story in a place that had become central to their relationship.”

The couple worked closely with Laura to weave their personal story throughout the ceremony, from the choice of readings to the symbolic rituals. The result was a celebration that felt both intimate and grand, private yet joyfully public as hundreds of beachgoers gathered to witness this first-of-its-kind event.

A Community Celebration: How the Beach Became Their Chapel

What made this ceremony truly magical was how it transformed a public space into an intimate celebration while embracing its surroundings. Gracie the donkey from West Hill Donkeys led Kirstein down the “aisle” of sand, while onlookers gathered at nearby beach cafes and along the seafront, creating an unexpectedly magical atmosphere of community celebration.

There was no other choice for us when it came to getting married,” the couple reflected. “Weymouth Beach is the most beautiful place on earth… “It was the first place we had a holiday together and we have been coming here at every opportunity since then to escape from the stresses of life. We hope to make it our permanent home one day.

Laura joined our two hearts together and will forever be in our hearts for making it so magical.”

Ask The Celebrant: How to Plan Your Own Beach Wedding

For couples inspired by Kirstein and Matt’s seaside celebration, Laura offers practical advice on making your own beach wedding dreams come true. “The key is to start with permission,” she explains. “Every beach has different owners and regulations—some are owned by local councils, others by private estates or conservation trusts.”

Laura’s top tips for planning a beach ceremony:

  • Research who owns your chosen beach and contact them early in your planning process
  • Consider the needs of other beach users and obtain necessary consents
  • Have a backup plan, such as a private handtying ceremony on the beach, if full ceremony permissions aren’t possible
  • Remember to take care of the legal aspects separately

For couples in England, Laura notes that you’ll need to complete what’s known as a “2+2” ceremony—the legal registration at a registry office, a basic statutory ceremony at a Registry Office typically costs £56, depending on location. This gives you the freedom to have your personalised beach ceremony then exactly as you envision it.

“Don’t be discouraged if your first choice location isn’t possible,” Laura advises. “A good celebrant will work with you to find creative alternatives that still capture the essence of what you’re dreaming of. Sometimes the journey to finding the right spot leads to even more meaningful celebrations.”
