Hi, I'm Dorothy
I love my job!!!!
Being a celebrant is the best job in the world.
It’s such an honour to be asked to participate in the most memorable parts of people’s lives – namings, weddings, vow renewals, funerals – they are all special and deserving of love, crafting and care.
People tell me that they understand how I can enjoy weddings and namings and vow renewals, but not funerals. “How can you possible say you enjoy a funeral?” Well it’s not about me for a start, it’s about the family, no matter the occasion.
And if, by using my skills in writing and performance to enhance your ceremony in collaboration with you (because the ceremony is truly a collaborative effort), I can make your ceremony meaningful and special, then that is the most fulfilling thing I can ever ask or hope to do.
I want to honour your beliefs, traditions and intentions to create as memorable an event as possible.
Through years of experience in performing and writing I have the skills to deliver a personal, tailored, meaningful ceremony that will be treasured. I would welcome the opportunity to meet you and have the privilege of creating your unique ceremony.
However, I am sure you would like to know a little more about me and how I came to be doing this amazing job.
I live in Bolton with my wonderful husband and cover most of the UK for weddings and a radius of about 40 miles for funerals.
I come from a large family (which is still growing) and over the years have witnessed and participated in every sort of ceremony possible – some great, some not so great – which made me think about how I would organise the same things. How could they be better? How could they truly represent the people that they are for?
There were two things that really set me on this path. The first was a wedding where the focus was more on the Celebrant than the couple who didn’t appear to have much choice in what happened on their special day. The second was having the opportunity to conduct my mother’s funeral.
Sitting through one and conducting the other made me realise that I have the skills to be able to offer a personal, tailored, meaningful ceremony that can be remembered and treasured, rather than a standard, impersonal offering.
I attended Bretton Hall College in West Yorkshire (many years ago), obtained a degree in English, Drama and Music, and since then I have always performed in some way, either acting, public speaking, or singing. I have been a teacher for many years, both Primary and Secondary school, and I continue to tutor privately, mainly in English for GCSE and A-level students. One of the things I love most of all is writing (which comes in handy for this job!).
I relax by having friends round and cooking for them. I have also been known to have the odd glass or two – usually red wine, prosecco or gin. My hair is unruly, curly and subject to colour change on a whim (to cover up the grey). I have hundreds of books, love Shakespeare and Monty Python. I would like a dog (preferably a golden retriever), but don’t yet have the life style to accommodate one.
What's my ceremony style?
I love all types of ceremonies as they all offer something different.
Naming ceremonies, for babies, blended families and transgender celebrations are always joyous..
Who doesn’t love a good wedding ceremony or vow renewal – whether it’s a large gathering or an intimate setting?
Funerals and memorials are completely special, and a real privilege to be a part of – the celebration of someone’s life can and should be truly special.
I also offer a service for anyone who is facing the difficult prospect of a terminal illness, where I work alongside you and your family to create the memorial that YOU want for your end of life.
I would never say to anyone that they should have a certain style or type of wedding – one thing that I pride myself on is adaptability – as long as I can physically do it, then it is ok by me. I love quirky, original and different, but I also love traditional and formal – your day, your ceremony, your way.

Excellent in every way
We were put in contact with Dot through the undertakers. What a lovely lady! When she visited us, after talking for a while, we discovered we had gone to the same secondary school! We then had a few minutes remembering certain teachers! Dot wrote a lovely Celebration of Life, whilst also being very tactful, due to certain circumstances. A very nice lady, with a great sense of humour, whilst also being sensitive of the occasion. I would recommend Dot to anyone for any ceremony.
Thank you
I’m overwhelmed with the presentation of the copy of P’s ceremony, it is so beautiful and fitting for someone I loved so much, I can’t thank you enough!
This lady in one in a million
