Hi, I'm Paul
Hi, I’m Paul Bytheway, and my celebrant company is called Stand By Me Ceremonies.
I love getting to know couples’ and their back stories to how they met, it’s one the best parts about being a celebrant! The process of writing a script for a ceremony can be so creative and I really love to include symbolic actions such as hand fasting and sand blending.
I often get asked why I became a celebrant. I guess there are a few factors, including turning 40 and starting a family. I was a high school Geography teacher for 10 years, since then, I’ve toured the world as a professional musician, and now I’m a trained couples celebrant too. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster!

What's my ceremony style?
I like to think the ceremonies I deliver have a really modern feel, with a good balance of sentiment, engaging stories and a little bit of humour. However, I tend to mirror the vibe of the couples I’m working with.
Being a former high school teacher and band frontman, my delivery style is unique. People describe me as a laid back introvert who happens to be in a position you’d find an extrovert! Make of that what you will!

Why choose Paul?
I love to meet new people and find out about their lives and what makes them unique, it’s so interesting! I’m completely open minded about working with same-sex and gender fluid couples, as well as scenarios that are not typical. All I’m interested in is people, so I can’t wait to meet you!
I’m also really open minded about the location you would like for your ceremony. In a hot air balloon, up a mountain, in the woods, at a festival, on a beach, you back garden, or in a beautiful venue, whatever you want to do, I’m there!
What do I offer?
Weddings
My ideal couples are people who are very much in love, and don’t take themselves too seriously! I love to work with people who have a great group of friends and family around them, with some characters who have a great sense of humour! My favourite ceremonies are usually quite laid back and chilled, with lovely people who are happy to celebrate the couple in the start of their journey. I really like rustic or alternative locations or anything out of the ordinary!
I offer symbolic actions in ceremonies such as hand fasting, sand blending, tree planting, etc. These rituals are great way to involve people who are important to you and its a really interesting way to bring your families together.
Being a musician and sound engineer, I can organise (or even take part in) live music to compliment the feel of the ceremony we have created together. I can also provide all the equipment for amplifying voices if it’s a large ceremony, and music playback.
I’m happy to have religious readings in the ceremony, as well as elements from different cultures. I am quite well travelled so always find this really interesting (and I was a Geography teacher, so the Geography geek doesn’t take much encouragement to come flooding out of me!!)

Naming Ceremonies
Naming ceremonies are a really lovely way to introduce your child into your family. Naming ceremonies are perfect for people who don’t have a strong religious faith, but still want to get all their family and friends together to celebrate their new arrival.
Naming ceremonies with me are fun, laid back and visual. I love to make ceremonies as inclusive as possible, so all of your family and friends feel a big part of the journey with your new tiny VIP!!
Even though a naming ceremony is primarily a non-religious event, I’m more than happy to include religious readings in your ceremony. This allows the celebration to be multi-faith and modern at the same time. A good way to be even more inclusive to your family and friends.
I design all naming ceremonies from scratch, so it is completely personalised to each family I work with. We have an initial meeting in person to chat about the style of ceremony they would like, then I’ll go away and start planning. I’ll typically plan in some nice moments for the parents, grand parents and guide parents to be involved in the ceremony.
Symbolic actions are a great way to make naming ceremonies be inclusive, creative and memorable. Candle lighting, sand blending, tree planting and hand and foot printing are some of the popular choices my couples make. There are so many options to choose from, so planning a naming ceremony is one of the most most creative things I do as a celebrant!
